Period 5

Hey everyone! Today, during the shortened period, we talked about the philosophical handouts we are creating (these ideas are related to Grendel). Mr. Eldridge talked about “nothing” and how it is one of the hardest topics to analyze because it is so broad, and, anyway, how can a person even talk about nothing? But some say that nothing has a more philosophical side than something. Anyway, he later then went on to suggest that we condense our handouts about each of our topics to something that is understandable for our classmates (a.k.a. your topic for dummies). Analogies would be a great way to help clarify each topic. For example, one topic for my group is solipsism, which is the philosophy that states that the only way to know something is true is to undergo the experience personally. In other words, the people around us may just be figments of our imagination, ourselves creating them to be whatever we want them to be. So, really, solipsism can be compared to playing with puppets - you are the controller of all the puppets (people) around you.

Then Mr. E discussed a picture of a tree on a board that had the words “This is not a tree” written next to it. That statement is 100% true because, if you think about it, it truly isn’t. It is only a representation of a tree. A real tree would have leaves and bark and all that good stuff.

After we went through this, we made our way to the computer lab to finish up our handouts. And that concluded the day. See ya!

  2. ridiculous! hahaha I actually think its really cool that that phenomenon was brought up. “This is isn’t a tree” is a really cool thought. I mean, whenever i saw that picture, I would be like yeah, that’s a tree. But i never thought that that is not ACTUALLY a tree. It is only a representation, a representation of a tree from your point of view. As was shown, all art is a represention of real life, most of the time in platonic (perfect) form. Art presents life at its utmost potential, its utopian vision.
