Hey Bloggers!

Today was a fantastic day in Eldridge’s class. We discussed Alex’s return to class due to his prolonged illness of swine flu (just kidding he didn’t have the flu). Shaina wanted no part of that and moved to a different table. After that, everyone got busy on their fun-filled essays by William Hazitt? (that is probably spelled wrong but you get the point). That pretty much sums up this uneventful day. Happy Tuesday!

4/28 Scribe Notes:

Nothing major today, we had another in class essay, this time on a passage from William Hazlitt’s essay “On the Want of Money.” The prompt was what rhetorical strategies did Hazlitt use to develop his position on money, and the essay pretty much took up the entire period. The class was noticeably more subdued than usual essay days, although to be fair I think this is the only in class essay that was not given on a Friday. Besides a minor episode of Jordan drumming on the table, and my paper getting thrown off the table, nothing else happened, and a lot of people managed to finish early.

In lieu of the lack of action during class, here’s a brief introduction of William Hazlitt, whose impressive chin can be see at the end of the scribe notes:

  • Although he is under-read, Hazlitt, along with Samuel Johnson and George Orwell, is considered one of the greatest English critics and essayists
  • Influenced by great Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke and Jean Jacque Rousseau
  • Worked as a painter, a lecturer, and a journalist, before settling into a life of writing and philosophy
  • Despite his essay dismissing the pursuit of money, Hazlitt in fact lived in poverty for a great part of his life, and wrote everything from a book on English grammar to art criticism to earn money

Enough procrastinating, back to annotated bibliography that’s due tomorrow. If you just found that out now, have a fun night.
