Period 4
4/21 Scribe Notes
Disclaimer: As the AP tests are coming up way too fast, I really don’t feel like organizing these notes into any certain comprehensible order, so…a simple chronological order should suffice…
O.k. First and foremost, Steven says hi, and Steven says that Tricia says hi. We began class with the usual fifteen minute interval after passing period filled with the normal insuppressible chatter, singing, and otherwise random shenanigans. After quelled, we were passed back a multitude of papers, the yellow packets (Civil Disobedience), the quizzes that accompanied them, and that essay we wrote about John Downe’s letter to his wife, Sukey, I believe. As AP minds cannot function properly unless under the perfect conditions (STP?), Nadir began to question Mr. E about his thermostat. Word to the wise, don’t question Egdirdle about his own classroom.
E: “You can play with it all you want.”
Nadir: “Can I?”
Anywayz…The essays we got back about Downe were ungraded and we ended up spending the rest of the period grading each other’s, scoring them, and giving “positive” feedback to the author of the essay who was not allowed to defend their “intended effect.” It didn’t work out too well…
Now Tricia really says hi.
Jordan is meowing.
We went over the grading rubric that AP uses to grade our papers, a scale ranging from 0-9, where most students, since under time and pressure constraints will usually score between a 3 and 7. A 9 paper is extremely rare and is guffawed at by the AP test examiners. Apparently, Mr. E. cannot even perform this daunting task as he eloquently stated when responding to this question: “Hell, no!”
The grading rubric goes as follows:
9 : uber crazy 8
8 : effective analysis, proper and sufficient reference to the passage, supported
explanation of rhetorical strategies
7 : good 6
6 : not so good 7 (adequate)
5 : limited, uneven, inconsistent
4 : inaccurate analysis, immature
3 : extremely vague, no perception of passage
2 : vague generalization, misunderstanding or misuse of prompt, summarization
1 : write something on the paper i.e. cat
0 : EPIC FAIL!
I’m not sure what a passing grade is as it takes into account all three essays and the multiple choice section, but the dividing line between the blatant good and bad is between a 4 and a 5.
30 seconds before the bell rang E decided to give us our new groups, leaving us with no time to choose group names. I suppose we shall continue the process tomorrow.
Random Shenanigan of the Day:
Nicolette (I hope I spelled it right) was caught on her phone and had to give it to Mr. E. She threw it…and he did not catch it. I think it is still somewhere under his computer.
Socialization = raising someone to not bite other people
That’s pretty much it…now I am going to go back and study for AP Chem…I mean AP English…cough…cough…cough…
Btw: Drumline placed first at the WGI world championships in Dayton, Ohio. We officially have the greatest drumline in their division on planet Earth.
ELKKS
I couldn’t find a picture of Downe so I found this random comic:

so i thought i’d be the first to comment on this interesting day. unfortunately, we were forced to criticized other people’s papers that sit two inches away from us. this made the rest of the day extremely uncomfortable. however, i did like that we got a chance to examine how our peers write…it gave me ideas of how i should format my own papers and compare and contrast our differences. one of the things i didnt like though was the grading scale. it seemed everyone was going by a different scale. some the 3-7, 5-7, or 0-9….which made it somewhat confusing, but in the end, i liked being able to know what did and didn’t work in my essay. anyone else feel that way?
im sure no one will find this interesting, but that is alright. have a good day!

@hayley bjorklund,
i didn’t like the grading scale either
it was so hard to grade myself and others
i really wanted a something “.5″ b/c i think that would’ve been much easier but e didn’t let us haha
sometimes you know you have to write it a certain way.. like be more concise or whatever but it doesn’t come out that way

@CCho,
i think it also has to do with the stress of the situation. when you sit down afterwards, you can always think of things you could have done better, or things you should have added…if only it was easier when you’re actually writing the essays

I’ve decided that i don’t think that I will want to/ have the patience to/will power to correct AP essays. At this point in time, I cannot read and comprehend an analytical essay in a minute and a half. I salute those who do though. However, I also think that students who have a better understanding of what a really good 8- or even a ::gasp:: 9- essay looks like is going to produce a better essay. As we’ve gone through this year of english we’ve been doing this in a less look-at-the-requirements-and-write way but in a I-want-to-do-a-good-job-on-this-essay kind of way though more analysis. In conclusion, our analysis skills have gotten a lot better this year and the fast reading skills are up to us.

Okay, Nicolette’s phone wasn’t the only shenanigan of the day. Adam and I decided we should leave another love note for our favorite attendance guy. So I came up with a dorky poem and we hung it on the clip. This is how it went:
Dear Matt (short for Mr. Attendence),
Attendance sheets are white and orange,
Call slips are pink,
We appreciate you more than you think!!
YAY!! Love, period 4
The only thing is he never came. I was so sad; I even decorated it with hearts!! But whatever. I think we should make a big card for him at the end of the year and have everyone sign it. =]

I feel bad for that attendance kid. He walks around minding his own business just doing his job and our class every day without fail laughs and claps. He probably not only thinks we’re AP freaks but worries about it. Haha if he ever becomes really self conscious I think period 4 are the people to blame.
(:
