Period 5

Scribe 3.27.09
Kirsten White for Shaina Denny
(We all love and miss you Hun!!!)
PS- I added some comic relief to lighten up everyone’s day a little so please don’t take it as offense to the subject…=)

Today class started out as usual for the most part, except everyone was still in a slight slump from the dreadfully sullen assembly. So I’m filling in for Shaina today (we miss you girl!!!). We began talking about the assembly and Dessouky actually described it as “depressing” (he says he didn’t cry, but he looked a little teary to me.lol). All this talk about the “Every 15 Minutes” program fired up our previous conversation on ethos and pathos, providing a new topic for discussion. (Mr. Eldridge…aaaalways thinking of new assignments..lol). But on a more serious note, we talked about the major difference between RIGHT and WRONG and explored the emotional appeal of the assembly and the overall 2-day event. On the topic, Jay said, “Teenagers are scientifically incapable of making good decisions…yeah…something with the brain,” (lol) commenting about a study where he heard teens lack something in their brains that helps them make sound decisions. Mr. Eldridge agreed. He went on analyzing the approach as primarily pathos, an attempt to appeal to us teens emotionally. Pathos seemed to be a stronger appeal than the others in this case so as to make teens “feel the consequences”, as Dessouky so eloquently put it. Eldridge said it addresses our “emotional memory.” He also had another good point:

Mr. Eldridge- “Alcohol is easier to get ahold of.”
Anthony Kroakin (blurts out)- “Yeah! Cause’ alcohol is easier to disguise. Not like drugs
though, they’re harder to disguise, but I wouldn’t know!”

Wow Anthony. Nice one!

On a lighter note, Mr. Eldridge happily informed us that today was “Southern day” as we inquired about his snazzy choice of clothing for the day (lol). He said he was going for Atticus Finch, but he looked more like a mix between Kernel Sanders and Bananas in Pajamas (pinstripes. ha!). Yesterday was actually “Over-Accessorize Day”, lol, but that’s not Mr. Eldridge’s style.(lol)

GAME TIME!!!!
“lock it down!”-Kroakin
1) Alex Carfi was on fire!!!
2) Me and Kim were on a roll.
3) veal and venneseee??? lol

Finally, after all the tragedy and excitement, we get to our discussion. In the green packets, we discussed #7 on JFK’s “Inaugural Address.” we decided that the passage appealed to both ethos and pathos. Mr. Eldridge said it was ethos because “Kennedy was leading by example by just being president.” We also decided it was pathos because he discusses the struggle the people go through and why they must take action and why they must keep “energy, faith, and devotion.” Rini makes a good point that the ethos underlines the pathos, which is, in his opinion, the major appeal.

Period 4

Upon entering English class today one could not help but notice the Mr. Eldridge’s exceptionally classy striped suit.  People were slowly filtering in from the “every 15 minute” so the class engaged in a discussion about the emotional appeal used in the assembly.  Mr. Eldridge said that as teenagers we can not be logical so the only way for the school to really make anything sink in is to use pathos (so they made the assembly ridiculously depressing).

This led to a discussion on how driving is the most dangerous thing people do on a daily basis and if you are drunk while driving you just fail.  Speaking of fail, we then compared flying to driving and how much safer flying is except in China (when Steven flew on a Chinese airline his plane almost crashed and I guess Chinese people clap when their planes land because they did not die).

Continuing on the subject of fail Mr. Eldridge said that he managed to hit a car in a driveway while he was backing out of the same driveway (I don’t understand what occurred there).

Tricia and Tristan finally walk in at this point and a couple of minutes latter Tristan once again left the room (not returning until the end of the period, spending a total of about 2 minutes in class today, nice).

Now for the game:

We were given three words and had to replace the sound at the beginning of the words to make new words that fit in a specific category.

It hurt my brain and I didn’t manage to get a single one.

Finally we got to the green packets and said that the main appeal was path and we talked about it for about a minute then the bell rang because the assembly went too long.

Dylan and Sean calculating something very importantWe were then told to turn in our responses which sent the class into a minor uproar and Sean tried to bs Mr. Eldridge saying that he thought only six was due today, and continuing the bs he said that he would email it tonight.

Another awesome Friday.

  1. Whoa whoa whoa, I am not entirely appreciative of the completely unnecessary (and not to mention totally untrue) accusations thrown about at the end of this daily “scribe.” I thought we were supposed to record down what happened during class, and not what happened in shoeman’s fantasy land. There definitely was no such bs.

    And the bs continues…

  2. ahh, that picture scares me

and in regards to period four, that picture is awe-inspiring. two kids in AP English busting out the ti-89s to punch away and estimate how many people die each year from drunk drivers.

Sean: “OH MY GOD 3 MILLION PEOPLE DIE IN THE USA EVERY YEAR FROM DRUNK DRIVING!!!”
