Period 5
Hey-Hey!
It’s Ryan Cady, doing the scribe for fifth period on this, March 24th, 2009. Today started off really fun, with some Tom Swifties, which is a sentence where the adverb at the end has a similar meaning to a main verb or clause.
Some Examples:
“Well I’ll be an SOB!” Tom said doggedly.
“Here’s someone who can’t speak!” exclaimed Tom dumbfoundedly.
Or, from Zachglasser:
“Come to my bedroom,” said Tom cockily. (Yeah, Zach really said that.)
By the way, Tom Swifties were invented by American comic artist and novellist Edward Stratemeyer in the 1920s. Here’s his picture.
The other topic of interest was none other than Jay Lee himself. Jay leaves class a lot. Whenever he feels like it. Today he went and got ice cream. He also didn’t offer to purchase any for anyone else…maybe I wanted some ice cream, too. Jeezum Crow. Anyway, I think we should have someone watching and counting to see how many times a day that he leaves class. Jay also gets to class late. And his phone goes off. And he plays with his pen and distracts Mr. Eldridge. I don’t know. I don’t get it.
The day itself was pretty random. Mr. Eldridge went over the origin of the word “Utopia” which literally means “No Place.” It was a play on “Eutopia” which means “Good Place.” Mr. E also got upset at how we do assignments. He said that we shouldn’t do busywork, that we should change the assignment to help us learn if we have to. The assignment means nothing if we don’t focus and learn. For the end of class, we looked at Winston Churchill’s “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat” speech, and discovered the opening to be entirely ETHOS, but he moves on to the standard pathetic appeal that Mr. E calls
“Defeating the Darkness!”
btw, Here’s the Alex Tally (Brought to you in the Presidential numbering system. Try and figure it out!):
Kolkin: Nixon (Fifth Term, Baby!)
Dessouky: Taft
Carfi: Benjamin Franklin (He should’ve been President.)
Have a good one.
Period 4
3/24/09
We started off the period by learning about Tom Swifties, which are quite fun. To make a Tom Swiftie, you end each sentence with an adverb that is a humorous reflection of the rest of the sentence.
Ex: “I might as well be dead”, said Tom gravely.
Ex: “I ate seven lamb chops,” said Tom sheepishly.
Ex: “That car just ran me over,” said Tom tiredly.
~pretty sure Adam said that one
Hehe after we calmed down, we still had other groups to hear from. But mystery told us that we should always end on a good note, so we didn’t hear anyone else’s Tom Swifties. Today was very exciting because we learned that a certain Big K is in the Russian mafia…
Don’t forget to do your homework aka the green packet speeches. Mr. E is collecting them eventually so do them!!!!! #4 and #5 are due tomorrow btw.
We went over the Churchill speech (#3)
· 1940=WWII
· Brits are going to lose war because Germans are taking over Europe
· Churchill is firing people up so they can be victorious, because people are thinking about defeat
· Can’t make logical appeal because logically they could not win the war (outnumbered, out-supplied)
· Churchill made ethical appeal by having a plan; leadership and lead Brits to victory
· Makes appeal to unity (ethical appeal)
· Switches to pathos (“all I have to offer is blood, toil, tears, and sweat”)
· Makes pathos appeal short because when people listen to emotional appeals they get overwhelmed and drained out
· States victory, victory, victory and did I mention some more victory, to appeal to people’s emotion; gets them riled up so they will be ready to follow Churchill so he can lead them to VICTORY!!!!!
· No survival evokes fear so people follow him, Churchill, and then he can lead the people to viCtoRY
· Didn’t want to end speech on fear
· Ends speech on hope and buoyancy by saying he will unite the Brits and take care of them
INTERESTING FACTS OF THE DAY!!!!
- · BK is in the mafia

- · Leo= in CHARGE, the boss, a god among everyone, basically the best ever
- · Taurus= earthy
- · Krig is a mafia member
- · Aries= fiery arguments
- · Brits have democratic gov, not monarch
- · I repeat…the krigmiister is in the mafia
- · Prime Minister of Britain before Churchill was Chamberlain; dubbed “I love Berlin” in French; because of Munich conference => he appeased Hitler
- · Question: Mafia?
- · Answer: Kriggy
- · When someone says there is an emergency or crisis, people listen or cooperate

Ryan, I have to say I don’t understand the point system, but then again, I don’t really care. These pictures are funny though especially Brian in fourth period.

Why would he name them “Tom Swifties” if his name was Edward? Wouldn’t he want some credit for even coming up with such a genius idea?! Oh well. Whatever floats his boat, I guess?

@Rachel Scheuer
“The name comes from the Tom Swift series of books (1910–1993), similar in many ways to the better-known Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series, and, like them, produced by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. In this series, the young scientist hero, Tom Swift, underwent adventures involving rocket ships, ray-guns and other things he had invented. A stylistic idiosyncrasy of at least some books in this series was that the author Victor Appleton (Edward Stratemeyer, Howard Garis, or others in Stratemeyer’s employ) went to great trouble to avoid repetition of the unadorned word “said”, preferring alternative verbs as well as heavy use of adverbs and phrases describing the manner or circumstances of speaking. Since many adverbs end in “ly” this kind of pun was originally called a Tom Swiftly, the prime example being “We must hurry,” said Tom Swiftly. At some point, this kind of humor was called a Tom Swifty, and that name is now more prevalent.”

I dont really understand why ryan cady devoted a paragraph to me.
In class, I learned churchill was a great speaker with mastery of rhetoric and ethos and pathos
