Period 4

hello everyone!
i came in latee today due to a dbq essay i had to write in apush and i found out everyone was taking a Self Reliance test on the important quotes =O. We started filling them in individually and then we got to work with our groups to fill in the rest. Actually, it was open book and open..people! We took a while finishing that up and then Mr. E told us we have to study the quiz and remember/memorize it. I think we have another quiz tomorrow. No open book or people this time so study your stuff! Then my group, Fame and Fortune started talking about the blood drive because Michelle is donating blood tomorrow. With that subject we talked about how if you give blood, you have to eat A LOOOOT and then eat a lot of sugar enriched foods afterrr you donate it–or else you faint or something like that. Michelle claimed that last time she gave blood she didn’t eat anything after and she was fine. Mr. E. said that if his sugar level drops then he’s out =O (he faints). I dont know how we got to this topic but we started talking about all these different types of cereal. And then we did the tone worksheet and today it was by Coleridge who was very complicated. The first sentence was about thinking about thinking. very confusing. and it was also about his/her (i forgot the first name) attitude toward the uneducated. While we were working on the tone worksheet Mr. E. told Michelle to stop talking and get to work and then.. OH that’s when we talked about cereal i think. i dont remember. Anyway, and then like ten minutes later, he came back again and told her to stop talking again because she’s distracting Andrew. Michelle claimed that she did work, showing him that she answered the questions but he said once again that she’s distracting Andrew. Michelle asked E. why he only yells at her and that its not fair and he said, “Am i yelling?” (and he wasn’t yelling the whole time btw) and then Michelle started saying that everyone else at the table was talking too and then he asked her why she as being a rat etc etc. And then E. said, “Was it Adam or Eve that ate the apple from the tree?” giving Andrew the win. hahaha… After all that business, Hayley recited the “A foolish consistency is….” paragraph. She wanted to face the wall and say it but E refused to let her. Super duper job Hayley! (i hope i’m spelling your name right btw..sorry if i misspelled it!) Then, we went on to Thoreau’s Economy, analyzing the third paragraph. Thoreau who was from New England said that getting things was a misfortune. In New England people wanted more money but Thoreau insisted that it was a misfortune. Also, in New England, serfs were very important part of society in their time. Also known as slavery, it was the heart of the abolition movement. Thoreau uses many different rheotrical devices, tropes, etc in his writings, making it harder for readers to comprehend. For example, he uses mythological allusions when it says, “…open pasture and suckled by a wolf…” (Romulus and Remus). He also uses puns when he talks about the “field they were called to labor in”. The “field” refers to both farming as well as a career/endeavor. As we read on, E. told us that Thoreau is saying that we enslave ourselves. We are actually owned by the land, not vice versa. The only way to be “free” is by being self reliant. Lastly, apparently, all the land we need is enough to be buried.
…and then the bell rang.

lets see… you should’ve read all of Self Reliance and you should’ve done the study guide for both parts as well as for Economy, Where I lived, and What I lived For, Conclusion, and for tonight read “Walking” and study the Self Reliance quiz!
OH and work on the virtue essay of course because parts 1-6 are due on Friday! Don’t forget to read your outside read book!

  4. WHOA
    how did she find that?
she has too much time on her hands.
    And flipping real estate?
wow. I remember there was a “reality” t.v. show in Korean about a house flipped over that was designed somehow to make people lose weight if they live in there. For example: If they wanted to open the door, they have to run around in a spiral path and hit a button within a few seconds for it to allow you to open it (providing you had the key of course). Plus there was a huge climbing wall and only basic necessities.
Must’ve been one hell of an experience Mr. E
By the way…. how did you ever think of Be Be as the name for the poor dog?

  5. so i know brent will probably ignore this comment because he always ignores me but:
YOUR DOG’S NAME IS BE BE!!!
    BAHAHA thats amazing!!!

but now for something of substance:
Does anyone else think that “self reliance” is narcisistic and self glorifying.
i believe so becuase it says that you should trust what you think as the complete truth. is that not paying your thoughts too much respect; your thoughts can be wrong. believing that you are always right and trusting others is “suicide.”
what the eff is that?!??!?! its ridiculous thats what it is!!!

  6. hello…so its officially christmas break and i’m doing school work. boo!
anyways thanks for the little shout out..i hate getting up in class to talk.

and i agree with mr. e about the blood drive. i happened to get called in to do the blood drive yesterday..unaware i was doing it. and i was sick..and later last night i fainted. Yay!…not. so remember it is a good thing to eat alot and drink a ton of water before hand.

and self-reliance. i agree that one must learn to trust their own thoughts. you shouldn’t be reliant on what other people think or said. everyone is an individual and should be allowed “to speak what [you] think in hard words, and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict everything you say today”, although society is not very welcoming to that idea.

    have an amazing break everyone!!!
