Period 4

The first part of class is really hazy since I didn’t remember that I had to do the scribe notes today. Luckily I was reminded by Mr. Eldridge when he told Sean Wang to speak up so I could add his comments to my notes.

We started class with a tone worksheet with a passage by Clare Booth Luce in which she made an argument against the exoneration of the American Press. The tone of the passage, at first, was slightly sympathetic but grew more harsh and critical the more you read. The author also used a rhetorical question to support her tone.

Begin reviewing the Scarlet Letter and Self-Reliance for the upcoming Scarlet Letter essay that is due sometime in January. Here are some “E” tips.

  • Don’t use a sigular pronoun in the begginning of the sentence and then switch to a plural later on in the sentence when you are reffering to the same object.
  • Use MLA format
  • Don’t use long quotes (you “page fillers”)
  • If you didn’t read the book, you’re screwed

First 6 steps of the virtue essay is due on Friday

Period 5

5th period scribe:
Today’s class was similar to many others (tone worksheet, frequent outbursts followed by Eldridge’s horrified expressions, etc.) The tone worksheet questioned if the media should be held responsible for its own actions which led to wondering if the news should present accurate information that serves only to inform or if it is considered a company and therefore should entertain. We concluded that Clare Boothe Luce’s attitude is critical and questioning yet she is also sympathetic towards the press. During this discussion, Callie was sent outside for extreme behavior; she felt her time was served and came back inside after five seconds. Then, Mr. E asked if a tree falls in the forest, does it still make a sound? He played the devil’s advocate and argued that trees may not make noise if nobody is around.

Something was mentioned about Tropic Thunder and Kolkin squealed with laughter. The class was in a debate-mood so we then argued if people should always get what they want–similar to capitalism vs democracy. The last part of class, everyone signed a get well poster for Henry.

Homework:

  • -Parts 1-6 of the virtue essay are due Friday.
  • -TSL essay was assigned and due Jan. 16.
  • -Work on the green Thoreau packet.

  3. Honestly, I know we’ve had like what 2 weeks now to start writing this “virtue essay” but I have had absolutelly NO time! Show week the 1st week it was assigned and then 3 run-outs a rehearsal and work on top of my 1st full DBQ essay?!?! I just didn’t have time for putting my always 100% effort into this. (But my trope paper is pink and the writing is very curly and cute) Mr. E. i’ll make it better over break but right now I’ve been way too stressed to even think about this essay. Sorry
