Period 4
Hello 4th Period!,
Sorry for the delay of the daily scribe (Hmmm can’t really think of an excuse, I just totally dropped the ball on this one). I missed about the first five minutes of class because I had to utilize the restroom, though I was told of several incidents of which I will probably mess up. Nicolette douglas apparently had a scuffle with Mr. E, though I am unsure of what it was about. Additionally Nicolette was chapsticking Michelle’s lips and “accidentally” missed her lips and put the chapstick into her mouth! Then Steven presented synecdoche and Annie presented Maxim/Adage. There are a few main points regarding Synecdoche:
• Figure of speech where the subject is expressed more or less than what is literally meant
• A whole is represented by naming one of its parts (genus named for species), or vice versa (Species named for genus).
• Part refers to whole/whole referst to part
• While Metonymy is the exchange between two nouns synecdoche is the exchange between two ideas
Adage:
• One of several terms describing short, pithy sayings, or traditional expressions of conventional wisdom.
• A condensed but memorable saying embodying some important fact of experience that is taken as true by many people
Maxim:
• One of several terms describing short, pithy sayings
• An expression of a general truth or principle, especially an aphoristic or sententious one. (Aphoristic = and aphorism which is a succinct comment and Sententious = full of aphorisms! I had no idea what those meant. Well maybe a vague idea…)
Next we analyzed “Nature” by RWE. Again I was amazed by the many points Mr. Eldridge enlightened transcended upon us. Additionally he encouraged us to seek correlations between TSL and RWE whether they refute or complement Emerson’s theologies. Sorry if I left anything out!
Sincerely,
Tristan

Daily Scribble:
For starters, Emerson rules (sorry Jay hawthorne smells funny). We completed a Syntax worksheet that incorporated sentence structure that supported its theme of writing versus conversation. I dont want to give away all of the answers to the worksheet so figure the rest out yourself. Then Big E went on a tangent about Bob Dylan and not knowing what he is saying along with Rober DeNero. Then somehow Marilyn Manson popped up and how the E miester’s friends brother was the personal assistant to Mr. Manson. Then it got mentioned that california’s nature is not harsh and that is why we dont understan Emerson. We reviewed the Scarlett Letter from yesterday and the progress we made about the ironies in the first chapter: the rose, civilization as a black flower, the weeds, the graveyard and prison in a utopia, the usage of the prison, and a few others. Then we decided that “life is a prison” and there was some sort of epiphany in everyone on how the story is written from within the prison. Then Hawthorne is sceptical of nature and how it pitties prisoners and since we were not understanding Hawthorne, Mr. Eldridge broke out a book by Melville (moby dick) a close friend of Hawthorne who puts Emerson down. So then it was clear that Hawthorne was poking fun at Emerson and Nature. To sum it up, bring your virtue essays tommorow. And try and find the face in the cieling. Clue: its by his desk.

Why is it always our period that forgets to do the scribe notes?
[Reply to comment]
We are all too busy spending hours upon hours of at home analysis of the multitude of literature packets that we received and perfecting our virtue essays, which we are not waiting until the last minute to complete…or start.
…cough…cough…ha ha ha ha…
I have no idea Sean…
