Period 4

  • This scribe is a day late because I typed hotmail.net, instead of .com
  • I took me a while to realize I was the scribe, so I am oblivious to any random occurrences that happened in the beginning of the period. :(

confidant/confidante
blond/blonde
Rene/Renée

  • Mr. Eldridge taught us that the first words are masculine, and the second words are feminine, since an “e” is added to the end, but both are pronounced the same. Both the spelling and the pronunciation are borrowed from French.
  • Our excercise was a quote from Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”. The class analyzed the string of infinitives, taking note of the tense which is important since it shows that the actions have not occurred yet. We learned that some languages don’t have tenses (like Chinese!) and somehow we went on a tangent about how math is its own language. Mr. Eldridge then started discussing how it is difficult to vizualize the concept of numbers. For instance, it’s hard to vizualize 8, unless you think of 8 chairs, 8 oranges, 8 apples, etc. Except for Tristan, who thinks of snowmen when he tries to vizualize 8.
  • The class started sharing their apply sections sentences in order to avoid taking the quiz on Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Nature” essay.
  • Sean helped the stalling process by acting crazy. I’m not really sure of the details, but by the end of it, he was squirming up to his chair from below his desk. Andrew said it looked like the desk was giving birth to Sean, which was kind of a disturbing comment.
  • We took the test. Not sure about other tables, but our table completely bombed it. It was not a good feeling. Afterwards, Mr. Eldridge told us that we should be memorizing important lines from speeches/essays/things we read.
  • After the disastrous test, we spent a few moments reading more of Emerson’s Nature essay. We weren’t able to finish it, so we stopped at line 24, in which Emerson is talking to a vegetable.

On this day went over:
  • How confidant/confidante and blond/blonde come from French confidant and blond being masculine forms of the word, the others feminine
  • Syntax
  • “Nature” quiz(illuminates the face)
  • Discussion on Emerson and “Nature”
No one person owns the land, self-reliance…
  • MEMORIZE TEXT, MEMORIZE TEXT, MEMORIZE TEXT
   What did I just say?

  3. Ah, there we go.

Also, it would be nice to know who wrote the scribes sometimes (the names on the board won’t be there forever).
