I'd have to agree with Tricia on this one-although I completely understand what Olivia is saying. We all love a good happy ending that gives us the warm and fuzzy's; however, the depressing ending was ENTIRELY NECESSARY for this story, because it does undermine the whole idea of Hester and Dimmesdale's inability to be together, despite their extreme love for one another. I really enjoyed the story-sad ending and all. By the way, virtue essays? When will those be due?

AND HAPPY BELATED THANKSGIVING TO ALL! I hope everyone stuffed their faces with turkey, or tofurkey for all you vegetarians out there!

according to wikipedia, the scarlet letter movie did really bad. really really really bad. it deviates greatly from the book, and it'll give people that happy ending they wanted, even though it sucked. i really liked the bittersweet ending of the book... it gives the story that finality that most stories don't have, but i thought that it was pretty clear what was going to happen. the whole happy ending to this story just would not have made sense at all.

hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving!!

olivia, the scarlet letter was made into a movie. hester is played by demi moore. its pretty old and it added stuff that never happened in the book. i saw the movie before reading the book so when i read the ending it was very different. im pretty sure in the movie dimmesdale doesnt die

Keren, I completely disagree. You by no means addressed the hilarious quote of the day. And to think you were in my Masticating Pumpkin Patches group...

Ok , to address the need for buzzers, Mrs. Haas said she can get any class buzzers if they needed them so either Rini or Mr. Egdirdle can ask her about that. Chris you DO have Haas still right?

PS. period 4 is most definitely the BESTEST. (superlative wins. me and Doug Welsh already decided that.)

so maybe im just a sadist or something but i like the end. its "refreshingly different" from all the Hollywood endings of everything. its more realistic.

The ending to the book is so...
absolute, in my opinion.

It seems as if there couldn't be a sequel.
After reading a good book, there is usually a feeling of continuation. Not with this book... It just ENDS. =/

yeah I did think the ending was pretty depressing, but honestly I wasn't surprised at all. The whole happy ending thing wouldn't make any sense with the theme and tone of the book, and everything seemed to foreshadow that it was all gonna go horribly wrong in the end. And while yeah it is sad, it is the only real way for the book to end. I mean, Hester and Dimmesdale's affair could never work as long as they both accepted Puritan order (which even though they planned to escape, they still did try to hold true), and Dimmesdale had to pay for his sin of hypocrisy, cowardice, and lying.

And besides, it's not all bad in the end. Chillingworth dies miserably and insignificantly without getting his revenge, which we all wanted. Hester lives at peace to a ripe old age, remaining in her place somewhat outside of society where she can best help those in need, which is where she is most happy, and Pearl lives her own happy life in Europe. And even though they aren't aloud to touch, Hester and Dimmesdale are eventually burried next to each other, which is a nice little romantic sentiment at the end.
