Period 4

Hey Period 4!

So today started out with Mr. Eldridge trying to figure out who was supposed to pass out our daily exercises but nobody said they were supposed to. Then Bread and Butter realized it had been them doing it all week, so of course they were supposed to continue doing it. Then, while we were supposed to be doing our worksheet, Team discussed the topic of abortion and if it should be legal and if you should have to tell your parents you need to get it. On the one hand, your parents should know this and help you make the right decision, but on the other hand some parents might abuse their child for getting pregnant. So we could not figure out which was better-keeping it a secret from parents, or telling them.  So then Mr. Eldridge got us all to focus on the worksheet but then somebody asked him about the calendars so Mr. E taught us where to find the agendas on the blog. Then a disgusting smell filled the room and Mr. E realized it was whatever Colleen was eating (no offense Colleen!) so he made her throw it out because apparently it smelled like an Asian market. Mr. Eldridge then asked Michelle how her Apply section was coming along and she said amazing so Mr. E taught us that amazing means in a maze and when you are amazed you are like in a whirl and astonished. And astonished is astone and that means stuck in stone. So when you are astonished, you are frozen (stuck in stone) with amazement. All right time to do my AP US History homework. See ya’ll tomorrow.

Period 5

SCRIBE FOR 5 NOVEMBER 2008! FIFTH PERIOD

Today was not to unusual for fifth period. As we all know Barack Obama was elected president and Zachglasser is still not happy. He still had to try to start debates with people in class (prop 8) and he remains unsatisfied. Once everyone settled down after chaotically screaming about their opinions while others remained silent and annoyed (haha) we started our daily Syntax worksheet- “I Hear an Army Charing Upon the Land” by James Joyce. The subject of the paragraph was the chariot which Henry Kim described as “it is like a thing on wheels.” James Joyce used an odd word order and went subject-verb. The purpose was to show they order of the things as if they were coming at you– horses, reins, whip, charioteers! The syntax mimics the actual experience. As usual Erica and Ryan Cady had some witty remarks to say about each other; someone pointed out they are like an old married couple, true. Then Gellan had her trope- paralipsis: stating and drawing attention to something in the very act of pretending to pass it over. Ex. “It would be unseemly for me to dwell on Sentaor Kennedy’s drinking problem, and too many have already sensationalized his womanizing…” After the trope of the day we talked about drugs and the black market. Then Mr. E went on to say that there are many fundamental changes coming up. We analyzed a political cartoon with a little person (who Henry Kim thought represented, GWB, but it did not) with his head open and “violence” written and coming out of it, and he had a smoking gun in his hand…. I hope you all get the picture. We came to the conclusion that people are doing concrete actions from representations. If that makes sense. At this time there was a chant begging for Ryan Cady to be removed from the class room. Erica says kids are getting dumbed up. Or is it dumbed down? The Greeks were ahead of their time believing that acting out violence could create violence on the streets. That was the end of period 5. So much fun.

  1. I have to say im a little offended by this whole idea that obama won so i got what i wanted and i should shut up now. I am very happy that Obama won, but i dont think that means im not allowed to be dissappointed with other results of the election. This is serious stuff, and i shouldnt have to compromise what i think is right just because some results went my way. Disagree with me all you want, but please dont try and dismiss my opinion.

That being said, im done “picking fights” and won’t discuss politics in class unless its appropriate or someone presents the debate to me. I’ve earned too many enemies as it is. And henry, i hope that goes the same for you, because what people seem to be failing to realize is that henry started as many arguments as i did, including the original fight that got jay and i kicked out and snowballed this whole thing. So yeah im over it and im sorry if i offended or annoyed anyone, although i will not apologize for expressing my viewpoint and standing up for what i think is right. I hope we can all be friends again…

  2. I think I can find the compassion to forgive you Zach.

But I agree w/ you. People are assuming you’re an Obama nut and should be quiet because you don’t know what you’re talking about.

  4. I just noticed on the online calender that next Monday (we have no school), there is an apparent Tone 5 worksheet due.
Are we going to be doing that Tone worksheet the day we go back to school on Wednesday?

……or will we have to print it out and have it done so we can discuss it promptly?

  6. Henry Kim you would be concerned about the Tone 5 worksheet.

And Zach– I do think it is a good thing you believe you should not have to compromise.

  11. Our class has been on fire this week because of the debates. So much so that me and others have not been able to concentrate and have become a little stressed out. So thanks zach for dropping politics! I’m tired of us all arguing and think we should try to get along better. (even los sacapuntas have been bickering about tofu and politics) Let’s all be friends again, besides obama is getting his kids a puppy! Yay!!

  12. Again, I don’t think it is always Colleen’s food that stinks, some teacher (over) microwaves their food before our period and the fumes travel to the classroom via air-con.

And asian markets don’t stink unless you walk down the herbal aisle or the seafood section.

Also, just wondering if anyone else (besides Mr. E) is keeping up with political news after the election. Some things, like who Obama is picking for his cabinet, is really interesting. There’s still 75 days left until Obama officially starts his term, so that’s 75 days Bush can try to sneak in a few last minute things before he leaves (e.g. John Q. Adams).
