Daily Scribe Wednesday 10/29/2008 – Period 4

Hey Everyone,

So today was a pretty busy day in Period 4. Mr. Eldridge was back. :) and he immediately began by getting “mad” at Yahtzee for forgetting to pass back papers. Evidently Andrea is the leader of Yahtzee because she is the only one who does anything. Trisha got her Nike’s at the Nike store in Canada. Michelle and Mr. E had a discussion about a “black box” which is actually a black stone called an oblisk that is said to have fallen from heaven when Muhammad prayed to Allah? I’m sure the story goes a little different and is longer, but thats what I picked up from their discussion. Michelle thinks nothing can scratch it, but Mr. E says anything can scratch something. (i.e. a laser can scratch a diamond)

We did Imagery #7- Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. Tristan said the man was sitting on a tree, when in reality he was sitting on a stump, which led to the development of the word (ampu-tree?) Then, Mr. E went into a story about a guy he knew with a prosthetic leg was attacked by a dog so he started screaming, and when people came over to help he showed them his prosthetic leg-it was a joke. Then came the discussion of how George Washington’s teeth were made of ivory, not wood. IT IS A MYTH! and Abraham Lincoln did NOT chop down a cherry tree.

We talked about the Scarlet Letter for a few minutes. Analysis: Hawthorne dislikes Puritans, but doesn’t take there views and practices out of the novel. Instead, like in Hester Prynne’s case, he doesn’t criticize them for the way they punished her.

The class was loud, so Mr. E rang his bell to get the class to silence. He didn’t want to have to treat us like dogs, but in this case, he had to.

Finally, we graded the Scarlet Letter quiz and part of the Bedford pop quiz. Most people were mad because the sub from tuesday didn’t give us enough time to finish the test and didn’t explain the directions well. I agree.

  1. Alright, I feel like I need to justify myself here because I said two comments about the imagery worksheet in class today that everyone laughed at.

First off, I said the color of a glint was sparkley. Ok, I admit that was a ridiculous statement. Moving on…

I also said that the land “devouring the sunshine” was similar to “sucking out the happiness.” Eldridge said that the land was grey and abyss-like and the sunshine could not affect it. I got that; I kind of thought it was obvious. What I was saying was, sunSHINE connotates joy and happiness (like a girl in pigtails frolicking in the grass on a bright summer day), and greyness is gloomy and depressing. Since the land overpowered the sunshine, it can be seen as the gloomy depressingness overwhelming (devouring) the joyfulness. Hence, the grey land is disallowing happiness. That was my reasoning.
