Daily Scribe Thursday 10/23/2008 – Period 5

Today was Mr. Eldridge was absent (on mole day, the most glorious of them
all according to ryan cady). We had Mrs. Bennett as our substitute who
supplied our class with some interesting stories, haha. Today was also
Erica’s first day back at school. After doing our detail worksheet, Henry
did his trophe of the day on Anaphora. We disscussed the possible
pronunciations of the word. Melissa did her trophe on Simile, Rachel on
Epistrohe, and Shelene did her’s on Anadiplosis. Mrs. Bennett then
discussed the “cardboardish mush walls” and addressed us as her “magpies”.
She definitly contributed to the excitement of class today even though Mr.
Eldridge was truely missed.

  4. Come one, Kim, don’t tell me you didn’t enjoy learning about how California has one of the best school systems despite the worst performance rates, and that we are surrounded by walls made of cardboard.

That right there is intellectual gold!

Too bad she didn’t talk about how Eskimos have extremely strong immune systems like she did last year in English.

  5. I had Ms Bennet a few times last year when ever Ms. Brosius was gone. She’s very entertaining, everyone in that class was really excited when she came because then they could do whatever they wanted on the computers.

She’s really good at helping you with vocabulary though. I remember that, she thought up some really useful ways to remember different vocabulary words.

She does go off on seemingly random tangents often about how important public speaking and good grammar are. One time last year she talked for almost twenty minutes about how this friend of hers didn’t have good grammar so she couldn’t get this teaching position even though she was really smart and really good with kids, they wouldn’t let her have the job because her grammar wasn’t perfect. The friend was really sad and Ms. Bennet didn’t have the heart to tell her that she didn’t get the job because of her speaking skills.

She’s right though. Like Eldridge said, she’s old and I guess if you’re old you get to go off on random tangents. Also if she’s not eighty then she’s got to be at least around 68

  6. I agree she is definitely one of the most entertaining subs. I had Mrs. Bennett in journalism freshman year a few times, and she once gave us a long monologue on how people can be prejudice against broccoli…. wow.

This is off topic (kinda), but what is the site where the tsl homework is posted? I forgot from last week… Gracias :)

  7. mreldridge.net

It’s under the AP Language tab at the top, and then you’ll find another tab after clicking that titled Scarlet Letter with links to each study guide.

  9. haha i loved how mrs bennet spent half the period lecturing on how to speak in front of the class as if we were 5. i felt like i was back in 3rd grade and preparing to do show and tell on my favorite toy. yeah but mrs bennet is definitely interesting; half the time no one knows what shes talking about, and i dont think she does either. but she’s great at wasting our time and raising eyebrows, so in many ways i cant wait til we have her again haha.

if im not mistaken last year she talked about how we have to be good at mining for gold and how pasta is better than sex. you gotta love her

  10. The best Mrs. Bennet moment by far was when last year she said how many Italians prefered pasta over sex, as Zach mentioned above; then she further went on to say that “both are pleasing”. :^)

  13. Like Mr. Eldridge said, “When you’re that old, you can talk about whatever you want.” So true. Personally, I like Ms. Bennet as a sub, she entertains us unlike other boring subs who just sit in the corner and read.

  14. Mrs. Bennet’s rambling was quite entertaining in the sense that she was rambling on about God knows what. Anyway, I did get one thing out her thrity mintue long speech- her position on oral presentations. I strongly agree with her that it is more important for a person to be able to speak comfortably in front of a crowd than to get straight A’s. While most high paying jobs do look for educationally gifted students, they want those who can connect to their consumers more. They need employees who can deliver heart warming speeches with the power of persuasion. So, all in all, public speaking is an aspect of life that we should all master before leaving high school.
P.S.- Mr. Eldridge, whenever we have a sub, can we Mrs. Bennet?

  15. WOW…
    I completely agree with Gellan.
Even if someone is technically smart(booksmart blehhhh, they still need to be able to interact with others the work with. Thus, the public speaking thing is really important.
    Yay
