Late Scribe Notes: Monday, April 28th – per. 3
Quote written on the board today:
“All human actions have one or more of these seven causes: chance, nature, compulsion, habit, reason, passion, and desire.” -Aristotle
Mr. E wrote these words on the board: “Learned Helplessness”
He gave us the example of how dogs memorize patterns.
-
When experimenting with the door of a cage being open, they test it and electrify the cage. The pain soon results in a response from the dog, and runs out.
-
When the cage door is locked, and it gets electrified, the dog becomes upset, and stops trying after a while, because he knows the cage is locked.
-
When they re-open the cage, and electrify it, the dog just lays; helpless!
Then, we had a “quick” chat on how using the word SOCIETY isn’t correct. SOCIETY can mean so many different things. SOCIETY, does not make you do something. It is an abstract noun. It is a modern day era: you don’t see it, you don’t hear it, you can’t taste nor touch it. It influences our choices. It becomes the people that live in it (people socialize with one another).
