Scribe notes 3rd period 4/23/2008

Quote of the day (much like Mr. Weaver’s Quote of the week) ”Our country is that spot to which our heart is bound”

-Voltaire (wrote Candide <3Mr. woods)

Skyler<3 invites Mr. E to his house for movie night, then questions the legality of it

  • We decide that home is where the heart is
  • We learn the history of Marathon and all of us agree on out affection for Mr. Trev, Mrs. Levine’s student teacher

Thucydides:      Situation:          War (Athens Vs Sparta)

-Specific moment :Mitylene Revolted from tentative rule

Yesterday: Athens has dispatched a ship with a message to kill everyone

Today: Should we just kill the leaders of the revolt, or everyone?

Cleon:

  • Poising the well
  • Do not trust fancy speakers
  • Question of justice
  • Do not show weakness
  • Make an example (death penalty…)

-Democracies in crisis are very volatile

  • Such can then lead to a dictatorship
  • Athens convinced Plato that democracy was a disaster

-Foreign wars are very destructive and extremely costly in such case it spreads the country too thin, and often collapses

-Common men are more intellectually gifted than philosophers

  • Maybe not more intelligence, just a different type of intellect
  • Person truth?

Most pressing side conversation question:

-Does Mr. E have to report any or all drug and alcohol references or comments that lead one to think that student would be involved in such activity?  And if so why have more people not been “spoken” to?
