Music: An expression of the soul

This is a thread to discuss the styles of music you enjoy as well as the plethora of artists representing each genre. Feel free to post links with examples of the artist/genre, while keeping it appropriate at the same time. This is not the place to bash other genres and artists, however. If you don’t have anything positive to say, don’t say it.

To start off, I enjoy Classic Rock, Classical, Big Band & Swing, Jazz, and Disco. One video I found interesting was the Scorpions performing with a full orchestra backing them.

  1. Youtube is truly a terrific thing. It has almost everything you could think of looking for. I enjoy various types of music as well, and there is probably at least one song from every different genre that I enjoy. I really like Broadway music. Some of the best musicals are Wicked and Les Miserables. I also enjoy the Jackson 5 and certain songs of Michael Jackson’s. There are other’s, but that would take forever.

  2. Hey I am almost done with what i have finished so i decided to post a comment to your interesting topic. Obviously I Love Ska. I enjoy ska and every form of it. From fist wave to third, including two tone. I know alot of people do not know about ska and for me this is only a chellenge to spread the word of ska. I found this video that explains the history of ska pretty well although much is left out but for all you unborn ska fans watch this and get some on your ipod fast.

I don’t care what anyone says, but Mark King is one of the best if not THE best bass players out there. Unfortunately the keyboardist had to kill the song (could have done better on the solo).

  7. Call me a sell out, but one group that I really like is U2. When bands perform live, half the show is how well the audience responds. For some reason audiences of U2 concerts always go crazy. Here’s a video to prove my point. Pretty good song in itself, but the audience definitely makes the video.

  9. Tommy you have never heard of where the streets have no name? I feel that you need to listen to more U2, and joey I think it is mainly because the song is so awesome the crowd is so into it.

  10. Michael he said that he’s never heard of Patricia’s song titled “DOES ANYONE HAVE A LIST OF ALL THE TROPES THEY ARE GOING TO BE ON THE FINAL AND CHRISTINA AND I BOTH HAVE INCOMPLETE LISTS.”

I’m sure he’s heard of “Where the Streets Have No Name,” we did it in Levine’s class.

  12. OK, SO THIS IS THE 4th ATTEMPT OF ME WRITING ON THIS TOPIC! (each time i try to type something, it all gets deleted, so yet again I will pour out my heart and soul into this writing, which will probably end up getting deleted again anyways- hopefully it doesn’t). Well, I have a huge appreciation and love for many different genres of music and artists/bands. Maybe you will see a pattern to why I like each style. Here is a list of my all time top-favorite groups of all time:
My favorite band ever is an incredibly epic group called the Arcade Fire. This band is grandiose and intelligent, and I have been fortunate enough to have seen them perform 3 times. Here is a video that conveys their sheer brilliance and incredible energy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V41qkhU-98 .Another favorite of mine is the post-punk band Joy Division. They are incredible in the sense that not only are the incredibly deep and introverted, but they are danceable as well! I love their lyrics. The lead singer has a haunting and amazing voice and you can see his unique dance moves in this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZwMs2fLoVE . Yet, I am also a huge hip-hop fan, and one group that I love a lot is the Wu-Tang Clan. They rap about not only their struggles from living in slums of Staten Island, but they have creative and interesting lyrics with themes of the mafia, Chinese mythology, philosophy, comic books, etc. Their lyrics make incredible references to random things such as Dr. Seuss for example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEPF2CNYkfk . Another favorite of mine is the “only band that matters”, AKA The Clash! They are very intelligent, political, and started new genres of music by fusing together punk, disco, and reggae, etc. Watch and be inspired. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-t52zc8Ex4 . I am also a huge fan of electronic/house music, which would explain my obsession with Daft Punk. I got to witness the greatest live musical performance of my life by watching them at Coachella 2006 and it changed my life. Behold what I witnessed.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOvsAd4XHI8 .
The Who is one additional group that I hold very dear to my heart. Again, I was very lucky to witness this group in the winter of 2006. They are the embodiment of a true rock and roll band: pure intensity and pure rebellion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp6-wG5LLqE . Folk/Folk rock is also a beloved genre, and is expressed perfectly through the genius that is Bob Dylan. He is the ULTIMATE lyricist and rebel! The video link shows one of the most controversial concerts in history: the day folk went electric. People were calling him Judas (‘sell out’) & just watch how he reacts! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO0gSJGJ7Fs Well, one other genre that I have failed to mention is proto-punk (the style that influenced punk), and which The Stooges are one of the principle example. An interesting fact- I got to hug the legendary lead singer, Iggy Pop! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLCQU8iKalA .One last genre that I love is Glam Rock, which was a British musical subculture in the 70s that fused science fiction, nostalgia, camp, theatre, and a 50s rock sound. Here is a video of T. Rex, the quintessential glam rocker, performing his quintessential glam rock tune. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjurGkVtbE0

(In addition to these styles of music, I enjoy plenty others! If I kept typing, I would start to bore you all. I’ll just leave the rest to your imagination) Actually, I might add some more later, if I feel intrigued…or bored enough. I hope you were all entertained because this took me an hour to write!

  19. It’s interesting to see everybody else’s tastes! I had no idea you like trance, Vijay. You should go to Coachella; they usually have several trance djs/groups (I personally am not into trance). Anyways, seeing that I’m bored and I just watched the season premiere of Lost (therefore I can’t sleep), I will attempt to entertain you all and share some more.
Well, this song is called “Straight Edge” (google the lyrics and you will understand my philosophy) by Minor Threat, one of the first “hardcore” punk bands. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGijtpSID3k Here is a treat for all of you MUN students: The Decemberists (phenomenal live band) parody an MUN conference/meeting, and also parody the greatest movie ever, a.ka. Rushmore .www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGijtpSID3k . Beck is one of those rare people that come across once every generation. His lyrics are witty, and also random as well, and his music is a combination of many genres: soul, funk, hip-hop, country, indie, rock and roll, electronic/techno, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUiHaQQDJNs Another band to watch for is Air, a dreamy and electronic duo that also have really creative video/songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqlaogBZ-SM An interesting note; the band I mentioned in the earlier post, Joy Division, disbanded after the death of the lead singer, and this group formed with the remaining members, creating New Wave. That band is called New Order http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niCfmQajoh0 This song, “The Robots”, is by Kraftwerk, and this video is genius, no hyperbole. It is honestly the coolest music video I have ever seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXa9tXcMhXQ I also really like Southern Rock, and Creedence Clearwater Revival are the classic of that style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqZhM75aGMg 60s soul/garage rock/mod is one of my favorite genres as well, and I am including videos from the bands The Animals, Human Beinz, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4yVN5CKwJ4 , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4L_RorlztM Continuing my 60s infatuation, I also really enjoy avante-garde/EARLY proto-punk, and The Velvet Underground are the quintessential one of that genre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UpFGoJHwLI

Well, as I’ve said before, I’ll probably end up posting more since I get bored and this is a fun topic. I wish you guys would post more videos for me to see! I want to see you all are into!

  22. The genres of music I tend to enjoy the most are modern classical and post-rock. The first because of my fondness for classical music, but with a twist – modern classical music is generally more daring than the traditional “Mozartian” classical, not to mention more distinctive from piece-to-piece. Minimalism and postminimalism are my favorite subgenres, both based upon repitition of small phrases (the difference is that the latter repeats ideas or moods as opposed to note-for-note repitition). Post-rock appeals because of its use of rock instrumentation (often in combination with classical instruments) and classically-influenced structure. It creates an effect that is seemingly both rock and classical while simultaneously sounding like neither.

    Examples:

Minimalism – Steve Reich, “Eight Lines” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuJCp9wsaj8 (not the complete peice)

Postminimalism – Michael Torke, “Bright Blue Music – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdA08jAsTPw (ignore the video if you choose)

Post-rock – Godspeed You! Black Emperor, “Storm” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sbzdyqA1gE&feature=user (again, incomplete)

  23. Pretty much, there isn’t a type of music that I can say that I “hate”…Music is all good…of course I do have my favorites… I have always enjoyed country(although it’s hated on a lot!), rock and also the great oldies. When people say they don’t like a type of music, it usually is because they don’t know much about it or even listen to it… Music is a type of liberation for the artist or writer, therefore MOST music is relatable and exiciting

    [Reply to comment]

  24. Has anyone else noticed the irony in having to watch a video to hear the music? I guess music sounds better when the internet shows you how it looks- no imagination required here.

    [Reply to comment]

  25. Usually, I just minimize the tab and work on other things while listening to the music; So i don’t understand the music video references. I’m not that fond of the videos. Half the time it doesn’t even explain what the song is about, just has some random stuff involving sex, expensive cars, etc… You get the idea.

  26. throughout the years i have changed my music taste various times and now i am sticking to my last change. I LOVE ODLIES! to me there is nothing that can ever compare to them. they are absolutly the most sincere songs i have ever heard. my love for them comes fro my mother, she was born in the 50s (yes she is old lol) and well i remember riding in my mom’s 88′ grey plymoth listening to 101.1 FM and curisin’ to the odlies. my uncles have been a great influence too, they are really big rockers, which i didnt really pick up on, but they were also really into motown. another thing i really remeber is singing every word to every micheal jackson song with my brother. all i listen to are oldies, old school, r&b, jazz, swing, doowop, and blues. some of my favorite artists are stevie wonder, the temptations, rosie and the originals, smokey robinson and the miracles, the shirelles, zapp and roger, aretha franklin, barbara mason, benny joy, big bad voodoo daddy, stray kats, the bobbettes, the cadillacs, the chi-lits, connie francis, the contours, danny and the juniors, dean martin, diana ross and the supremes, denice williams, dion and the belmonts, the drifters, earth wind and fire, elvis presley, buddy holly, the four tops, frank sinatra, frankie valley and the four seasons, heatwave, the isley brothers, jack johnson, james brown, keith sweat, kool and the gang, marilyn monroe, the markeys, martha and the vandellas, the marvelettes, marvin gaye, maurice williams and the zodiacs, nekromantix, otis redding, the penguins, perry como, ray charles, ritchie valens, the ronnettes, rose royce, sam cooke, bessie smith, george and ira gershwin, louis armstrong, jelly roll morton, and a lot more…

  28. ok for all you people who did not watch the ska video i posted a million years ago; I will say it once again SKA is the best music in the world and will always be so there. I would now like to present a phrase that I have just now thought of: Life equals music and ska equals music therefore ska is life.(copyright 2008)

    [Reply to comment]

  29. I don’t understand what SKA music is about. Rochelle had tried to explain it to me once, but it didn’t take. What does SKA have in it that makes it so awesome?

    [Reply to comment]

  30. Here is something that has bugged me so much in music: lack of originality. Basically the music that gets churned out today, for the most part (and especially so in the mainstream) is formulaic. I guess that with hundreds of years of using the same notation to control music (and for a long time the same rules) there is only so much that can be done, but I still get the feeling that much of what those of us who write music do is recycle the same ideas over and over without adding any personal touches or new ideas to it. Watch the following video, in which a comedian rants about how much he hates Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” (which you have most likely heard). But pay attention to the end, where by playing the same eight chords (or small variations thereof) taken from a classical peice, he manages to ramble on a list of songs that have borrowed them. A very long list, might I add. I think it supports my point.

I suppose that reflects my character too. There aren’t many things that I dislike, but even so, I may surprise you with character and choice of music. Enjoy
