Scribe notes 1.23.08 (0 period)
Posted on January 23rd, 2008 by Jonathan Wooldridge
Hello there! Today’s scribe notes brought to you once more by Jonathan.
Happenings:
- Ryan’s trope, ADAGE.
- An adage is a short saying that has become widely accepted due to frequent use (ie, A penny saved is a penny earned).
- Julian’s trope, the closely related MAXIM
- Similar to an adage, only accepted as a general truth rather than a common saying (ie, do unto others as you would have done unto you…or something like that).
- Discussion on addiction (”i’ll just have one. maybe another. ah, just one more. this is the last one, i promise. no, another…” and repeated ad nauseum).
- The secret to doing your homework for this class is: DO IT EVERY NIGHT AND DON’T FALL BEHIND. Wow, so shocking. Seems we’ve all learned this one the hard way, though…
- Bicycle Thief notes.
- Neorealism’s influences include Dickens, Chekov, Flaubert, and Ibsen (all authors, not film-makers).
- “Verità e Poesia,” meaning “truth and poetry,” sums up the aims of neorealism.
- For those who do not know, a dowry is the set of gifts a daughter is given by her family for the purpose of marriage and its payment. The higher a woman’s dowry, the higher she could marry.
That’s the important stuff. Tune in next time!
