Hey you guys, sorry about posting these notes two days after I was scribe….
Alright, so ten minutes into class I realize that I am scribe for the day, so rush rush to get out a piece of paper and pen out to write down the notes in English.
- Eldridge writes on the board: “Late work PLEASE!”
- Progress Reports were passed out=People panicked =0
- TSL work=HARD; Eldridge draws the graph from Sept. to Now…December is the month that everyone’s graph drops in
- Eldridge explains the differences between Hawthorne and Emerson. Hawthorne sees nature as evil, confusing, and beautiful as well as dangerous. He believes that a person must know his or her place, and conform to their society. Emerson, on the other hand, sees nature as a manifestation of God, that children are good, and that nature is good as well.
- Eldridge says that many people read TSL and see it as a victory for independent women, but that’s not true. Really, it’s a defeat for independent women because Hester, in the end, counsels young women and tells them that they should conform to society.
- Discussion ends so we can watch “The Bicycle Thief”
- It is a neo-realistic movie, meaning it’s going for reality (striving to picture reality)
- Verisma’=true; reality
- Metaphor, syntax, diction, tone (through music), and Imagery [tells the entire story]=a movie
- The messages that are conveyed by the movie depend on how the shots are (from what angle)
- And then we watched the movie, and Andrea laughed really hard when the little boy, Bruno, rose his hand in the air and started yelling in Italian, and we both said the Italian phrase in Kicking and Screaming with Will Farell…=)

“Bicycle Thief” is a great movie because it captivates the audience. It captures realism of poverty and unfortunate times.

I had the chance to see Man of the Year this weekend. I’d say it was a really good movie. It really shows how a company or government can destroy a person that is trying to do the right thing, no matter what the result of their actions would be. I found it similar to Bicycle Thief because in both movies, there is an incident and the two characters go to the authorities of each plot, get no way through that, and then try to solve the problem on their own; only the difference is that in Bicycle Thief, the main character is directly affected by the problem and in this movie, the entire US is affected… That, and the fact that there was somewhat of a happy ending to Man of the Year.
