Daily Scribe for Thursday, 12/20/07 (Period 0)
· First we did the tone sheet-“Beverly Hills, Chicago”
-there was a shift in the attitude towards gardens
· Discussed pictures of labyrinths on the screen
-Many labyrinths were in churches-found in Europe, especially Italy (Catholic church) and Ravenna
-visual metaphor of life – the path towards finding God
-minotaur (half man/half beast) lived in labyrinths
-if you don’t chose the right path, the minotaur will destroy you
-also a metaphor for being spiritually lost
· Amoral/Immoral Discussion
-Amoral: w/o any moral consideration, no evil, there is no evil or good because those are moral judgments, nature (never subjugated)
-Immoral-against a moral code, has moral distinctions, there exists good and evil, based on morals, society/civilizations side, Dimmesdale ( is forced to stay on the moral side, however, by free will, he decides to wander into nature, fails, cannot break away from moral code)
-humans are natural conformists
-when Dimmesdale decides to leave the maze of confusion, he goes to nature, he changes dramatically, but he still fells a moral responsibility
-Dimmesdale’s free will and Hester both guide him towards the wild
-Free choice creates who you are
-he is tempted to tell bad things to people, but he resists, he knows that it is wrong (bound to a moral code)
-Mistress Hibbins noticed that Dimmesdale had met the Black Man
-as much as Dimmesdale would like to free himself from society, he forces himself to do what is better (according to Hawthorne), follow a moral code
-Dimmesdale focuses on law, not his love for Hester, even when he was dying
-Hester becomes a shadow with a letter and the letter has become her name
