Daily Worksheets:
Class began with the passing out of Tone Worksheets. The worksheet had an excerpt from a story titled, Prosper Presents For the Wedding Party, written by Judith Martin. The main question of the Tone worksheet was to derive her attitude towards the idea of gifts and their true purpose, as well as how people decide on which gifts to choose for whom. The paper was obviously written with a sarcastic tone, perhaps even condescending. Her main view on the idea of gifts is that gifts should have a use, rather than just sit on a table, collect dust and be referred to once every year.
Side Conversations:
- Discussed the movie, “I am Legend”. Nghiem says the book was a much better read than watching the movie. Everyone who saw it in the classroom, that voiced their opinion said the ending was weird. It is not exactly weird, but more as defines a heroes’ final battle. He must sacrifice his own well-being to save the world.
- Bryce, who went to see the movie above on the first night proudly stated he played a very exciting game. If you want to know more, ask him about it.
- Argo and Eldridge called each other Kwanzaa Kid and Christmas Kid.
- Schuyler tried to figure out what Degredation means.
- Schuyler has a Skydawg moment (His time to do or say whatever he wants and not be judged by it)
- Tommy and Tara tell each other to stop drinking.
- Tara says I do scribe notes “waaaaay” too much; therefore she gets up and changes my name to her name and then tells me she told me she was going to do that.
- Eldridge tells us we are on crack.
Essays
People have not been reading. TSL is one level above Timed Writing prompt by Lady Montagu. Therefore, we discussed the story and prompt in groups to help us learn to read and analyze the question. A group scribe was elected to take notes.
Group Scribe Notes:
- Question: The main idea of the prompt is to analyze her method of conveying her views of roles played by women during the era of man’s reign.
- Context of Excerpt: The transfer of knowledge and tradition from woman to woman.
- Main ideas:
- The need of education to save themselves from bad men, or to protect women.
- Education gives independence to women from men.
- Conceal knowledge to separate from he/she fools. The fewer that know about something, the more of worth it has to the individual and the public, therefore the fools will want the easy way out to figure it out.
