Detail work sheet # 12 was passed around. Jonathon showed up just to see what he would miss, then left to Drama. The passage was from George Orwell, “Shooting an Elephant”. George Orwell shows an image from his autobiography: a dead man in Africa. By showing the details of a dead man, he shows interest, but by using detached expressions, he creates the impression that it is not personal interest. The application portion involved describing a horrific event that has happened to us. Brandon wrote a truly horrifying story about bagels and a lack of cream cheese, and to add to the scariness, Mr. Eldridge brought up the idea of tofu cream cheese. The clock says 7:07, which is LOL upside down. Luis shared his horrific story too, his reminded Mr. Eldridge Johan’s story of crunching bones, inspired by Saw 3. Mr. Eldridge said he only has time to read one section of our tone/diction/syntax/detail sheets, so he has to gamble. Then, we looked at our Nature quizzes. Post answers to group questions on the blog. Complete the book review before your conference; the book review must be at least 6 pages. Submit it via turnitin.com, and the virtue essay at turnitin.com, as well. There will be no dialectical journal for The Scarlett Letter (thanks Joey). There may be an essay tomorrow, or perhaps a quiz, if I heard correctly. Emerson and Hawthorne both believe in keeping the outward and inward senses in tune with each other, but their opinions of how it is done contrasts sharply. The rest of class consisted of a lengthy discussion on Nature, both the short passage and actual nature. Part 20 is important; it is the fundamental idea of Transcendentalism. Accidental means it could be changed without changing the thing itself. Occult, in this passage, refers to something spiritual. And remember, nature wears the colors of the spirit, so I recommend our class gives an honest effort to be happy, so the sun can smile!

  1. I’ve been thinking about this whole “nature wears the colors of the spirit” thing. When I visited Wisconsin this past summer, one night it rained about as hard as it did during 5th on Friday, but for hours on end. The next day I went to a restaurant to eat breakfast, and the waitress couldn’t stop talking about how glad she was that it had rained because the area was in a drought.

In contrast, when I walked around the airshow/ convention at the airport later that day, I noticed that many of the pilots around were talking about how horrible it was that it rained; that it dirtied up their planes on display and that people who camped out under their planes got wet over night.

Anyways, I also noticed the same thing at school. The rain was all fun and games until lunch time when people started thinking about walking home in it.

  2. I don’t think it’s just nature, EVERYTHING wears the color of the spirit. Everything and everyone looks the way they do to you becasue of the way that you look at them. (No, I’m not arguing with anyone).
