This is what happened in class today
**The bell rang (its annoying everyone), but don’t worry, eventually we will get our old bell back….Hopefully very soon!!
**The imagery worksheet was passed out it was on an excerpt from The Woman Warrior, written by Maxine Hong Kingston
-there was a lot of confusion because no one could figure out what a gourd was, and the dictionary was not much help
-Gourd: A vegetable that can be hollowed out for use as bowls, cups, or to hold stuff, after it’s been dried out
**Future Teachers of America (Andrea and Jamie) left at 7:00 for their field trip to Cal State Fullerton, I hope you guys had fun J
**Then, we discussed the Imagery worksheet and turned it in
**We went over the Concrete and Specific Worksheet
-abstract: you can’t touch (emotions), because they are not solid
-general to specific: you communicate feelings more clearly to elicit an emotional response
EX: tree =oak tree
**In essays always be specific
-what one word might mean to you does not necessarily mean the same thing to another person
EX: The writer wants to implant this in your brain.
-OUCH!!!!
**Mr. Eldridge mentioned the Cartesian Coordinates post on the blog
-had a math lecture on imaginary numbers, because no one has commented on the post, except for a few people
-Its hard to think of yourself as a math equation
-you have to apply the natural language of mathematics to English metaphorically = everything in life is a metaphor
-this was an admissions question one year for the University of Chicago (yikes!)-those people are being challenged to think outside the box
**Isaac did his trope on Anataclasis
-it involves the repetition of a single world or phrase, but with a different meaning the second time
**Analysis is the division of something,
-purpose: to understand each part individually and then be able to understand the whole
**Monday’s reading
-refers to all stereotypes about wives in 1972 (Feminist Movement “I am a woman hear me roar”)
-women get paid 70% of what men do
-Mrs. means Mistress of husband’s name
Today’s Lesson in Life: If you don’t understand concepts, you will eventually be replaced by a machine. Get involved and question things. Computers can only reproduce what we give them. Humans have the ability to invent new things.
Our randomness in class
***Annie Dillard is a GIRL not a guy; Annie is a girl’s name even though Anthony argues that it is also a boy’s name because Obi Won calls Anakin, Annie in Star Wars.
***We were talking about how something that is not natural is supernatural in the second discussion question on the imagery worksheet, and eventually Mr. Eldridge started a discussion on a guy called Supernatural- he holds the record for rhyming in the Guinness World Record Book.
