Daily Scribe for Thursday, 10/25/2007 (Period 0)

Please excuse my lateness in writing these scribe notes!

Ok, I guess I’ll go straight to the point:

-The Process Analysis essay was due “today”.

-Half of the class was missing due to the Haunted Homecoming assembly.

-A Detail sheet was handed out today, and it was written by Tennessee Williams! (of The Glass Menagerie fame)

-it seemed as though one third of the class passed out billions of sheets of graded work!!

-Mr. Eldridge read past AP essays that were on the same “Audubon vs. Dillard” topic that we wrote in our “in-class” essays.

-Ornithology- study of birds (I believe…)

-The contrasts between Audubon’s and Dillard’s writing was that:

•Dillard marvels the overwhelming beauty of the birds

WHILE

•Audubon is scientifically interested in the birds and isn’t “bashed” by the beauty.

-We did Peer Editing on the Compare & Contrast Essay essays for 15 minutes instead of the normal 20 minutes.

On Another Note:

-Denial is powerful and is the first thing everyone feels/does in a situation

-Mr. Eldridge fills us in by teaching that Southern accents are just slowed-down versions of British accents. He cared enough to give us an example by speaking with a “Southern twang”. I can slightly agree with this statement, as I went to North Carolina this summer and the accents, apart from being incredibly cool, did appear to slightly sound British. At first, I disagreed, but I had a sudden revelation that this could in fact be true.

By the way, all physical and outdoor activities were canceled or postponed throughout all of Orange County! This means Homecoming is postponed as well unfortunately. (Do not blame administration…. They didn’t cancel it out of ill will and malice.. ) Although this does indeed “suck”, think about the positives…… YOU WON’T POLLUTE YOUR LUNGS AS MUCH AS YOU ALREADY DO ON A REGULAR BASIS!!

Anyways, I hope you all have a magical and glorious weekend! Relax, don’t stress, and enjoy your life simply! I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH!

I love you all! Sincerely! :)

  1. You’re so positive it’s amazing. I think I love you. :)

  2. The contrast essay was interesting. Anyone who has AP History, do yall’ remeber that Audubon was one of our key terms? I thought that was rather interesting. History and English really tie into each other. We recognize all the great writers in English; then in History we focus on how their achievements and writings have had drastic effects on America. Ok maybe not drastic effects, but enough to make others think about situations happening around them.

  5. “Denial is powerful and is the first thing everyone feels/does in a situation”
    Not really. Its more like “Denial is a powerful emotion that CAN influence people in a situation” This way doesn’t make it sound like everything in the world has a negative point.

  6. It’s not positive or negative, Vijay. It’s just how people initially respond to any stressful incident.

    Here are the five stages of stress/grief:
    * 1. Denial and Isolation.
    * 2. Anger.
    * 3. Bargaining.
    * 4. Depression.
    * 5. Acceptance/Hope

    It’s all over the web in different forms, but here’s a concise version: http://www.memorialhospital.org/library/general/stress-THE-3.html

    Our goal is to recognize the stages and see if we can move into the Acceptance stage sooner rather than later and get on with our lives.

  7. True. But it seems necessary in order to have the best outcome, to go through the five, or more steps rather than just speed through the first few until you feel you can accept “it”. Even though, i don’t believe anyone truly ever accepts anything for “good” or “bad”. Those steps are vague too. When people think depression, they immediately relate it to bad things. I’ll explain more later on. Anyone have any thoughts on making them more concrete and specific?

  8. If Denial is neither positive or negative, it must be zero.

  9. Correction: If denial is neither positive NOR negative, it must be zero.

  10. Be careful there, Vijay. Zero is not a number–just a place-holder. A space for nothing. Now a thing can exist (ie, be something) and not have to have a value judgment, positive or negative, and yet still exist. So let’s not jump to hasty conclusions and think we can mathematize everything.

    Positive and negative value judgments are not the same as positive and negative numbers. Therefore, let us not confuse one set of connotations for another. What you are doing, in essence, is substituting metaphors (an equation for words)–these metaphors then control our thinking. All of our explanatory systems are metaphorical to some degree: none can contain the infinite variety that is (read GEB very closely, it’s in there). So do not trust that reducing a complex experience into an equation–especially a simplistic one–will work, or be accurate.

    As a wonderful professor of mine said, “Go in fear of abstractions.”
