Scribe of the Day 09/25/07 (period 0)

-Classwork

  • We started out the day with an Imagery Handout
  • Volunteers passed back graded worksheets
  • We had a discussion about the Imagery handout
  • Imitate/mimesis/mimetic
  • We talked about how the paragraph had a drum rhythm to it which kept the sentence going at a steady pace.
  • Tropes in “Of Studies”: Parallelism, Antithesis, Ellpsis, Asyndeton
  • Then we discussed the “Of Studies,” writing from Francis Bacon (1603)
  • Mr. E said the whole course is “Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man”.

-Random Stuff

  • Elizabeth forgot Kevin’s name
  • Luanny interrupted Mr. Eldridge when talking to Christina
  • Monty asked Christina randomly “Where are you going to college” and Christina answered that She “Always wanted to go to Harvard or Yale”.
  • Mr. Eldridge said “Harry Potter is OK”
  • So then we had like a five minute discussion about Harry Potter.
  • We found out that Mr. Eldridge’s favorite instrument is the Bass.
  • Mr. Eldridge then said that “I would rather spit out the Da Vinci Code then digesting it”
  • He then ended the day saying ‘Woman got her name because when God made her he said, “Woah Man!”‘ (Bill Cosby)

  1. Question:

I noticed that our schedule for reading is off of where we are. As in we were asked to read the Angelou on Monday when the calendar says to do it Tuesday.

Which makes me wonder about that one page single spaced response the calendar says to turn in this Thursday. Is that true?

  3. I had these same questions for Eldridge regarding the calendar. What people need to understand is that everything in the box is due on that day before getting to class. So in Wednesday’s box it says Dillard “The Chase” meaning you have to read that on Tuesday night to have it ready for Wednesday. (A little confusion before, although hopefully made clearer now)

Regarding the Critical Writing, I have no idea when he’s going to talk to us about that (probably tomorrow since it’s due on Thursday) Hopefully it doesnt require too much time tomorrow night.

  4. It won’t if you’ve done all the reading and analyzing and thinking and journaling ahead of time, then it won’t be too bad at all.

  5. I understand the Critical Writing assignment is due tomorrow (Thursday). But it is still not clear to me what exactly we are expected to do to prepare for this “Critical Writing” assignment. Also, I seem to be out of the loop on what the Online Quizes are. Are they just the tests on the BBR site? Any help is apprecited.

  6. Follow the directions for the writing assignment in your BBR and you shouldn’t go wrong (unless I’m wrong). The quizzes are those on the BBR site. Register with them and make sure you can log in (if you can’t, and you’ve tried everything you can think of, give the computer a good kicking or just email me). Then on the main BBR page under “student resources” click “Reading Quizzes” and the rest is self-explanatory. Have fun.

  7. Some people say that the Harry Potter books got a whole generation into reading. I have to agree with this, just because of my own experience with these books.

My dad read to me the first Harry Potter book when I was in first grade and then I started reading them myself when I was in about third grade. I loved them. Everyone loved them.

However, between the time that the sixth and seventh books were published, I had the pleasure of having Ms. Robinson as a teacher. I really do think it was her that introduced me to books that didn’t “spoon feed” you everything. I learned to read between the lines and appreciate the broad meaning behind books, something I’d never done before.

So this summer was when the seventh book came out; and when it did I happened to be in a position (some 1700 miles away) where I couldn’t buy the book. After a few weeks of plugging my ears to not hear the ending from friends, I did read it. However, this time it was much like watching a movie. Yes, there were twists and turns, but there was no symbolism, no bias, and nothing beneath the surface. Yes, I liked the book; I won’t deny that.

The book I really enjoyed reading this summer was The Great Gatsby. When I finished reading that book, it felt like I’d accomplished something worthwhile. So yes, Harry Potter did get this generation into reading, but by no means did they get this generation thinking critically. That’s something we’ve got to do on our own.

  8. Ok (just for clarification); for Thursday on the calendar it says this:
    27 Minimum Day
p.104, Critical Writing (1 pg, typed, single spaced) Due

    Imagery 4

    HW: TW: Eudora Welty

Does this mean that the homework for Thursday is the TW: Eudora Welty or does it mean that it is due on Thursday? If it is due on Thursday, what is it?

  9. I agree with Joey on the topic of Harry Potter Books. Back in Elementary School, i remember there were few books that actually caught the attention of the students. One included a story about people with the ability to morph into animals, i forgot the book title but i’m sure someone will post it after this comment. The other was Harry Potter. Although back then, it wasn’t as big a deal to people all around the world as it is now, mainly because the book series has brought the children as well as adults to see the pleasures of reading. Even though the series does not exactly contain the best written books, the storyline and morals of a young hero, was all it took to spark a flame in millions of minds. The best thing about this story was that the movie did not come out until years later, which allowed all the readers to visualize every detail.

  10. Mr. Eldridge decided for period 3 that the 1 page on critical writing will be due Monday. If that is the case for Period 0 as well, then do not worry about it. I do not know what he meant by the HW: TW. But if no one else knows or he does not answer in time, then do not worry about it too much. Ask him and let him explain it tomorrow, and if it is due tomorrow, you can work on it tomorrow and turn it in using the Three-Week-Rule.

  11. And your prediction was right! Title of the book was Animorphs…well, when everyone else read Nancy Drew or Goosebumps back in private school, I was reading about morphing people and brain-controlling slugs…

Sorry, I couldn’t help posting this, it bothered me not seeing the title of the book series that I cherished in my elementary years :D

But that’s true about what you said about Harry Potter. Morals + young hero + action/comedy/roller-coaster-ride-of-life = one of those books that sticks in the back of your mind. Also…If the movie came out straight after the book, I doubt J.K. Rowling would get much sales profit from the book series, and she wouldn’t be cherished as the one writer permanently glued to everyone’s mental bulletin board.
